Drag Rules & Regulations

Pacific Raceways is a NHRA sanctioned track. All cars that run down the drag strip are required to undergo a technical inspection by the track’s Tech Crew. NHRA publishes an annual Rule Book that covers every classification from Top Fuel to ET Bracket Racing and is used by Pacific Raceways’ Tech Crew. Track rules are listed below.

 

 


 

2013 Drag Racing Rules & Regulations

(Revised 1/29/13)

These rules are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish standards for such events.  By entering and participating in an event, participants are deemed to understand and accept these rules.  NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATION OF THESE RULES OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES.  They are intended as a guide for conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator, or official.  These rules may be changed or amended from time to time by the management of Pacific Raceways.

 

THE RACE DIRECTOR’S DESCISION IS FINAL IN ALL CASES

 

        The Race Director shall be empowered to permit minor deviations from any of the specifications herein, or impose any further restrictions that his or her opinion does not alter minimum acceptable requirements. NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRENTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH ALTERATION OF SPECIFICATION. Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials.  Their decision is final and may not be protested in any manner.

 

1.0   General Rule Statement

 

1.1 Vehicles participating in racing events must appear presentable at all times.  Any vehicles bearing advertising or messages deemed inappropriate by Pacific Raceways will be denied participation.

 

1.2 Any participant (including drivers, riders, crew members, etc.) considered to be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other judgment impairing substance will be disqualified from the event and will be asked to leave the facility.

 

1.3 Speed limit in the pit area, staging lanes and return road is 10 M.P.H.  Burnouts are allowed in the burnout area (behind the starting line) only.  Dragsters are the only vehicles allowed to burn out across the starting line.  Any other vehicle that does may be disqualified.

 

1.4 Participants at events are expected, at all times, to conduct themselves in a professional and non-disruptive manner.  Any participants who, in the sole and absolute judgment of the track personnel,  1) verbally or physically threatens another participant or other person, 2) uses vulgar or derogatory language, 3) engages in unsportsmanlike conduct or conduct detrimental to the sport of racing, or 4) otherwise creates a condition or circumstance that is unsafe, unfair, or out of order shall have violated the rules and regulations of NHRA and Pacific Raceways may be disqualified from the event or banned from the facility.

 

1.5 THERE IS TO BE NO ENGINE NOISE PRIOR TO 9AM.  In the months of February, March, April, September, October, November and December there is to be NO ENGINE NOISE AFTER 5PM.  In the months of May, June, July and August there is to be NO ENGINE NOISE ON CERTAIN DAYS AFTER 11PM.

 

 

 

2.0 Technical Inspection

 

2.1 Pacific Raceways is an NHRA member track and will use the NHRA Rule Book as a guide for inspecting vehicles.  Pacific Raceways reserve the right to impose additional requirements more stringent that those specified in the NHRA Rule Book.

 

2.2 Pacific Raceways may permit minor deviations or expectations from those prescribed in the NHRA Rule Book.

 

NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH DEVIATION OR EXCEPTION.

 

3.0   General Rules

 

3.1 All race vehicles are presumed “race ready” (per NHRA rules) upon entering the facility.  Once a driver has passed tech inspection, there will be no refunds or exchanges.

 

3.2 Racers are allowed to have a maximum of three crew members assist them in the restricted area.

 

3.3 Crew members’ ages 16 through 17 years need to have a Minor Release and Waiver of Liability form executed by either both parents or guardians to enter the restricted area. Children 15 years of age and under must remain in the enclosed portion of a tow vehicle while in the restricted area.  Minor Wavier forms are done on an annual basis.  Both parents or guardian must sign an annual wavier form for minors to enter the restricted area.  Minor Waivers and wristbands are done in the registration building across from the staging behind Grandstand “B”.

 

3.4 Each race vehicle should display a competition number and a class designation on the windshield, both side windows and the left rear window.  Numbers should be 6 inches tall on sides and 3 inches on front and rear.

 

3.5 Your dial-in will be displayed on the scoreboards as well as on the dial-in display boards in front of the burnout box.  DO NOT STAGE YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL YOU HAV CHECKED YOUR DIAL-IN. By staging your vehicle you have accepted that your dial-in is correct.  Your dial-in cannot be change beyond the red line at the front of staging.  Motorcycles must report numbers and dial-ins to the tower before eliminations or have them displayed clearly on the Motorcycle.  You cannot dial out of your bracket.  Jr. Dragsters must have the dial-ins permanently displayed on their dragsters.  No dial-ins on tires for any class.

 

3.6 Wristbands must be worn for the duration of the event.  Racers and crew members must have their wristbands visible to Pacific Raceways officials.

 

3.7 All warm-ups must be confined to the pit area.  Jacks stands must be used at all times.

 

3.8 Competition numbers: Competition numbers are complimentary this season at Pacific Raceways, for racers that compete in the Jr. Drag Racing Series, High School Series and any racer that has a current NHRA ET Bracket Competition Number, if a racer doesn’t have a current NHRA ET Bracket Competition Number, then they must pay a $10 fee and they will be assigned a Pacific Raceways Competition Number for the 2013 season.  Racers that come out for Wicked Wednesdays or Test and Tune will not be charged for a competition number.

 

3.9 Staging/Time Trials/Eliminations: Do Not pull into the Staging lanes until your class has been called.  Please report to staging lanes when you are called.  Please Monitor the PA or 540 AM for staging lane assignments and calls.  Run order and Lane Assignments for Time Trials on ET Drag Racing Series events are as follows: Sportsman lanes 5 & 6, Pro lanes 1 thru 4, Super Pro lanes 1 & 2, Motorcycle Lane 7.  Run order for eliminations on ET Drag Racing Series events are as follow: Pro Rd 1, Super Pro Rd 1, Motorcycle Rd 1, Sportsman Rd 1, Pro Rd 2, Super Pro Rd 2, etc…

 

3.10 Tail lights must be on when you leave the front of staging.  Blinking lights are prohibited.

 

3.11 All oil must be dumped in the oil trailer located near the gas pumps

 

3.12 No one under the age of 16 is allowed to operate a motorized or wheeled vehicle at any time.  Vehicles may be confiscated until the end of the event.

 

3.13 The gates to the track will be locked 30 minutes after the final car goes down the track for the night.

 

3.14 Singles for 1st rd will be chosen by the best Reaction Time in the final time trial for Super Pro, Pro and Sportsman.  Singles will always be picked by reaction time.

 

3.15 Ladders: Super Pro will be laddered after 1st rd and will be based on reaction time from the 1st rd.  Pro and Sportsman will be random pair until there are 16 or less cars, then they will be on a ladder based on reaction times from the previous rd.  Motorcycle will be on a ladder for 1st rd based on reaction time in qualifying.

 

4.0 Rainout/Curfew Policy

 

4.1 If rain or other occurrences halt racing at any time before the completion of the first round of eliminations for your class, racers will receive full credit of entry fees and there will be no payout and no points will be awarded.  If rain or other occurrences halts racing after the first round of eliminations for your class, points will be awarded to the last completed round and payouts will be divided among the remaining racers.

 

4.2 No refunds at anytime.

 

4.3 If an event is rained out racers/spectators have 1 year from that date to use the credit.

 

4.4 The curfew at Pacific Raceways on Saturday nights is 11pm.  We will NOT be running past 11 pm on any of our Saturday night Summit E.T. Drag Racing Series events.  If we run up against the curfew we will award points back to the last completed round and the payout will be divided to all racers remaining in competition from the last completed round.

 

 

 

 

5.0 Points

 

5.1 Points if all classes (i.e. Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle, Jr. Lightning, Jr. Thunder and High School) will be awarded as shown in the 2013 rule book, Section 3, page 3 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Points:

5.2 Tiebreakers: If a tie exists at the end of the season, the first tiebreaker goes to the racer that went furthest in the last Summit E.T. Drag Racing Series event. The second tiebreaker goes to the racer that went furthest in the second to last Summit E.T. Drag Racing Series event. If a tie still exist, then the tiebreaker will continue to go back until the tie is broken.

 

5.3 You must notify Pacific Raceways no later than 14 days from the race date in which you believe an error was made to your points.  There will be NO changes to your points after the 14 day period.

 

5.4 In order to participate in the 2013 Summit E.T. Racing Series Final at Pomona, CA. You must be 18 years old on or before November 10, 2013.

 

5.5 You must sign up for points at Pacific Raceways, it is a $10 charge and you will receive a 2013 Summit E.T. Drag Racing Series decal that needs to be placed on your vehicle. You must sign up for points prior to receiving points, points will not be awarded for races that you were not signed up for points at.

 

6.0 Summit E.T. Finals

 

6.1 The NHRA Division 6 Summit E.T. Finals will be held August 30th through September 1st at Spokane County Raceway in Spokane, Washington. This is a “Team Tournament” event where each track in NHRA’s Division 6 sends 58 representatives who, in addition to individual honors, earn points towards a team championship.  Pacific Raceways will send drivers in each of the following classes: Super Pro, Pro E.T., Sportsman, Motorcycle, High School, Jr. Lightning, and Jr. Thunder.

 

6.2 The Brackets for the E.T. Finals will be as follows:

                        7.50 – 11.99                        Super Pro            (Electronics allowed)

 

                        9.00 – 13.99                        Pro E.T.                 (No electronics)

 

                        12.00 – slower                   Sportsman          (No electronics)

 

                        7.00 – slower                     Motorcycle         (No electronics) Split Tree

 

                        11.00 – slower                   High School         (No electronics)

 

6.3 An NHRA competition number is required to compete in the Summit E.T. Racing Series Finals.  NHRA forms are available at the track.  Pacific Raceways recommends that racers competing in the Summit E.T. Drag Racing Series purchase an NHRA competition number.

 

6.4 High School competitors’ car may not be entered in the Race of Champions.  All High School eliminations will be on Saturday.  All High School competitors can race on Sunday in the bracket that they are legal for.

 

6.5 This season we will be honoring the E.T. Finals team at our Awards Banquet.  At that time we will also be honoring the top 4 Points earners in (Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle. Jr. Thunder and Jr. Lightning will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  High School will be 1st and 2nd place) the top 3 points earners will receive awards checks and champions will receive jackets and gold cards no matter what.

 

6.6 As agreed upon at the NHRA Division 6 Track Operators’ Meeting, Division 6 Tech will require an acceptable Oil Retention Device for all E.T. Bracket which go 9.99 or quicker at the E.T Finals at Spokane County Raceway in 2013.  In 2013 Pacific Raceways will require an acceptable Oil Retention Device for any car running 9.99 or quicker no matter what class that car runs.

 

7.0 General Information

 

7.1 LED Bulbs will be used on the Christmas tree at Pacific Raceways.  The Cross-Talk system will be used in Super Pro.

 

7.2 The Cross-Talk system will be used at the Summit E.T. Finals.  For further information on the Cross-Talk system, Pacific Raceways will have a supplement sheet explaining the system.

 

8.0 Buy Backs

 

8.1 There will be no buy backs at any of the Summit E.T. Drag Racing Series Events.

 

9.0 Breakage

 

9.1 If your vehicle breaks during unloading, tech, or any other time prior to attempting your first time trial, you will receive full credit for your racer entry fee.  As a general rule the point of demarcation is the “water box”, you will not receive credit for your racer entry fee.

 

9.2 No cash refunds at any time will be issued by Pacific Raceways.

 

10.0 Super Pro (7.50 – 11.99)

 

10.1 Computer: Prohibited unless stock OEM equipment or OEM replacement.  See General Regulations 9.1 in the NHRA Rulebook.

10.2 Data Recorders: Permitted.  See General Regulations 9.2 in the NHRA Rulebook

10.3 Delay Boxes: Permitted.  One box/delay device only attached to transbrake and/or throttle timer only.  Delay boxes may only display delay amount.  All direct wiring must be clearly identifiable to the tech inspectors.

10.4 Transbrake: Permitted. Transbrake switch must be NHRA-accepted; See NHRA Approved list

10.5 Line Lock: Four-wheel line lock permitted.  Linelock switch must be NHRA-accepted.

10.6 Automated shifter: Permitted.

10.7 Throttle Control: Permitted per NHRA Rulebook.

10.8 Ignition: Stutter boxes are prohibited.  Three-steps, Two-steps, or single stage rev limiters permitted.  Any rpm limiting device legal unto themselves but altered or installed so as to function as a down-track rpm controller, prohibited.

10.9 Switches and Buttons: Must be standard mechanical connection type.  Infrared lasers, retinal scan, fingerprint, light source or any other non-mechanical type of switch and/or button are prohibited.

10.10 Compulink: CROSSTALK will be used in Super Pro.

 

11.0 Pro E.T. (9.00 – 13.99)

 

11.1 Computer: Prohibited unless stock OEM equipment or OEM replacement.  See General Regulations 9.1 in the NHRA Rulebook.

11.2 Data Recorders: Prohibited.  See General Regulations 9.2 & 9.10 in the NHRA Rulebook.

11.3 Delay Boxes: Prohibited.

11.4 Transbrakes: Permitted; See approved NHRA transbrake buttons list.

11.5 Line Lock: Four-wheel line lock permitted.  Line lock switch must be NHRA-accepted

11.6 Automated Shifter: Permitted

11.7 Throttle Control: Throttle must be manually operated by driver.  Electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics or any other device may in no way affect the throttle operation. A dead-stop under the carburetor linkage or gas pedal is permitted.  Throttle timers and counters are prohibited.

11.8 Ignition: Stutter boxes are prohibited.  Starting line and “high side” rev-limiters permitted.  Two-steps, rev-limiters or any other rpm limiting devices, legal unto themselves but altered or installed so as to function as a down-track rpm controller is prohibited.

11.9 Switches and Buttons: Must be standard mechanical connection type.  Infrared lasers, retinal scan, fingerprint, light source or any other non-mechanical type switch and/or button is prohibited; 11.10 Tow Vehicles: Prohibited.

 

12.0 Sportsman (12.00 and slower)

 

12.1 Computer: Prohibited unless stock OEM or OEM replacement. See General Regulations 9.1 in the NHRA Rulebook.

12.2 Data Recorders: Prohibited.  See General Regulations 9.2 in the NHRA Rulebook.

12.3 Delay Boxes: Prohibited.

12.4 Transbrake: Prohibited.

12.5 Line Lock: Four-wheel line lock prohibited.  Two-wheel line lock permitted on non-drive wheels only.  Line lock switch must be NHRA-accepted.

12.6 Automated Shifter: Prohibited unless OEM equipped.  Electronic or pneumatic shifter permitted; must be manually controlled by driver.

12.7 Throttle Control: Throttle must be manually operated by driver.  Electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics or any other device may in no way affect the throttle operation.  A dead-stop under the carburetor linkage or gas pedal us permitted.  Throttle timers and counters are prohibited.

12.8 Ignition: Stutter boxes prohibited.  Single stage “high side only” rev-limiters permitted.  Rev-limiters or any other rpm limiting devices, legal unto themselves but altered or installed so as to function as a down-track rpm controller is prohibited.  Crank trigger system prohibited unless OEM distributorless ignition.  Ignition systems equipped with built-in two step rev-limiters must have the “low side” (start line) function disabled.

12.9 Switches and Buttons: Must be standard mechanical connection type.  Infrared lasers, retinal scan, fingerprint, light source or any other non-mechanical type switch and/or button is prohibited;

12.10 Tow Vehicles: Prohibited.

 

13.0 Motorcycle (7.00 and slower)

 

13.1 Delay boxes and throttle control: Prohibited.

13.2 Data recorders: Permitted.  See General Regulations 9.2 and 9.10 in the NHRA Rulebook.

13.3 Ignition: Stutter boxes prohibited.  Starting line and or “high side” rev-limiters permitted.  Rev-limiters or any other rpm limiting devices, legal unto themselves but altered or installed so as to function as a down-track rpm controller is prohibited.

13.4 Switches and Buttons: Must be standard mechanical connection type.  Infrared lasers, retinal scan, fingerprint, light source or any other non-mechanical type switch and/or button is prohibited.

13.5 Scooter and/or mini bike are prohibited.

13.6 Split Tree: The motorcycle class uses a split tree system.  Riders can choose either a .500 full tree or a .400 pro tree for eliminations.  Riders wishing to receive a .400 pro tree must have a P displayed next to their dial-in (ex. 9.05P).  The riders wishing to receive a .400 pro tree will see a minus sign (-9.05) on the scoreboard.  DO NOT STAGE YOUR BIKE UNLESS YOU HAVE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE RECEIVING THE CORRECT TREE. There will be no re-runs do the wrong tree being run.

 

14.0 High School (11.00 and slower)

 

14.1 High School competitors must be enrolled in High or be a 2011 graduate.

14.2 Same rules as Sportsman or Pro.

 

15.0 Jr. Dragster (7.90 and slower) 85 MPH Limit

 

15.1 Gauges: Tachometer may monitor/display engine rpm only.  Play back type tachometer permitted.

15.2 Ignition Shutoff: Second shutoff to be mounted on driver deflector plate within three-inches of the top of the roll cage.  All connectors must utilize eyelet and screw connections. Push on type prohibited.  Six-inch long wire tie must be attached to spark plug wire within one inch of spark plug.

15.3 Towing: Tow straps may not be attached to any portion of the roll cage.

15.4 A fluorescent or brightly colored flag attached to the Jr. Dragster at anytime the vehicle is towed is mandatory.

15.5 Jr. Lighting is 13 years and older, Jr. Thunder is 8 years to 12 years old.


 

 

The following rules are only a few NHRA rules you need to meet to race at Pacific Raceways, but they are the most commonly caught by our tech officials.

 

Credentials: Drivers must have a valid unrestricted state or government issued driver’s license, with no underage driving restrictions (i.e. supervised, provisional, etc.) or an NHRA Competition License; subject to inspection by officials at any time.

 

Helmet: If your car runs 13.99 or quicker you must have a helmet with a SNELL 2005 rating or newer.

 

Roll Bar: Mandatory in cars running 11.00 to 11.49 (including T-Tops), in convertibles running 11.00 to 13.49, and all dune-buggy type vehicles running 12.00 and slower.  See NHRA Rulebook Sec. 4A.

 

Fire Jackets: Required for drivers in cars running 11.49 or quicker meeting SFI spec. 3.2A/1; Drivers in cars running 9.99 and quicker must have jackets and pants, meeting SFI spec. 3.2A/5.

 

Master Cutoff: A master cutoff for a battery is required for any car where the battery is relocated.  Battery must be securely mounted as described in the NHRA Rulebook.

 

Catch Can: A catch can is required for coolant overflow. One pint (16-ounces) minimum.

 

NHRA Chassis Sticker and license required for cars running 9.99 or quicker or running 135 MPH or faster.

 

After market harmonic balancer mandatory on all cars running 10.99 or quicker (SFI spec. 18.1)

 

Driveshaft loop: A driveshaft loop is required on all vehicles running 13.99 or quicker and utilizing slicks; except vehicles running 11.49 or slower equipped with street tires.

 

Protective Clothing: Full-length pants; short- or long-sleeved shirt; closed shoes; and socks.  No shorts. No tank tops. No open-toe or open-heel shoes or sandals.  Synthetic clothing not recommended

 

Wheels: “Spinner” style wheels or any wheel design that incorporate moveable pieces while vehicle is in motion or stationary are prohibited.


 

 

DRAG RACING BASICS

 

Pit Area: Go to the pit area, park and prepare your vehicles to race.  Please allow for as many people to park in the pit area as possible.  Please read all racer information you were given at the gate.  Then report to tech.

 

Release and Wavier of Liability Agreement Form:  This form must be signed by drivers and crew members before entering the restricted area.  You can sign the Release and Waiver of Liability Form at the white registration building, located behind grandstand B.  The restricted area starts at the front of the staging lanes and goes all the way down the track.

 

Tech Inspection:  Tech Inspection will be held in the staging lanes.  You will go through Tech Inspection during the 1st time trial for your class.  When you pull up to Tech make sure you have your tech card and that it is filled out legibly and signed in PEN.

 

Staging Lanes: Come to the staging lanes only when your class has been called and please come to your assigned lanes that have been called over the PA or listen to 540AM.  When your lane or class is next, make sure that you are ready to race.

 

Water box: Cars with slicks will be guided into the water by the Pacific Raceways official that is operating this area.  Only start your burnout when the Pacific Raceways official has given you the signal to start.  All burnout must done in a forward gear and moving the car forward.

 

Pre-Stage: Move forward until the top 2 sets of lights on the “Christmas Tree” are lit.  At this point you need to prepare as the 3 amber lights are ready to count down to green.

 

Staging: When your stage lights are lit, that is a signal to the starter you are ready.  The tree will then start the countdown as soon as your stage lights are lit and your competitors are too.  Your last staging motion must be in a forward direction.

When staging “Deep” do not stop your forward motion after the pre-stage light comes on.  Proceed to a deep position and be ready.  When deep staging, you must stage before your competitor stages.  The Starter will NOT wait for you to stage deep.

 

Race Time: If you experience any problems while making your run down the track, please pull over to the side of your lane, next to the wall and stop.  If you don’t have any problems with your run, don’t stop until you have cleared the race track.  If you “red light”, which is an automatic loss during eliminations, DO NOT slow down, this will be frowned upon by the race director and there may be consequences for this action.

 

Finish Line: Drive past the finish line, leave your vehicle in gear and brake.  Turn right at the first exit which you can safely negotiate the turn.  Yield the right of way to the vehicle in the right lane when exiting the track. 

 

REMOVAL OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND WINDOWS BEING ROLLED DOWN BEFORE EXITING THE TRACK IS PROHIBITED.
