Glenn Powers ’55 Wagon to Season Opener Win

Over 175 cars turned out for the first drag race of the season under beautiful blue skies and temperatures in the upper 60’s for a perfect day of drag racing.
Steve Glenn topped a tough Super Pro field to win the Pawn X-Change Drag Race Series season opener at Pacific Raceways in Kent on Saturday (April 23). Glenn, of Covington, beat Tim Schmitt, of Everett, in the final round running a 9.816 at 131.99 to Schmitt’s 9.533 at 139.79 in his 1972 Chevrolet Luv.
Glenn’s 1955 Chevy 210 Handyman Wagon, a fixture at Pacific Raceways, has in the past been driven by his two boys, Dallas and Dana. Saturday, however, was Steve’s turn and he made the most of his limited seat time in the car defeating a tough class, including Al Chinn in the semi-final round.

In the Pro final, Zach Craig wheeled his Olympia-based racer to the winner’s circle beating Todd Kenner’s Sumner-based 1972 Cuda running 10.009 at 131.93 to top Kenner’s 9.584 at 127.57.
The Sportsman final was won by Paul Young in his 1966 Pontiac Tempest topping Jerry Biscay in the final round 12.414 at 106.52 to Biscay’s 14.690 at 93.29 mph. Jacob Havens, of Mill Creek, squeezed off the motorcycle win over Dan Funderberg beating the Federal Way rider 8.971 at 125.67 to Funderberg’s too fast 9.453 at 137.55.
The next race in the Pawn X-Change Drag Race Series is Saturday night, May 7th. Time runs begin at 5:00 with eliminations in the evening.
